Our History

The GRANDCRUISER was first designed and built in Newcastle, NSW in 2004. The team at Grandcruiser started the project by looking at caravan designs in Australia and Europe. They found that the Australian caravans were old technology, very dated, and very ‘boxy’. On the other hand, the European caravans were aerodynamic with modern design but with the drawback of very lightweight  construction and  small chassis. Neither had good insulation and neither was the best possible build for Australian conditions.

The Grandcruiser team then set about designing a good looking caravan that would stand up to the punishing Australian conditions and also give users the best possible comfort.

The 6 years since 2004 have seen constant improvements in design, materials, quality, and performance, and the process of improvement continues.

Grandcruiser was designed in Australia with four key points in mind:

STYLE

STRENGTH

COMFORT

AERODYNAMICS

The Grandcruiser has a huge galvanised chassis built of 400 grade Australian steel. On it sits the 45mm thick sandwich floor, with fibreglass underside for protection and high grade foam for strength and insulation.. The walls and roof are each a one piece engineered sandwich, with fibreglass on both sides bonded to a high density structural, fire resistant foam core that doesn’t absorb water. The front and rear sections are each one piece panels, with aerodynamic shape and made from very high strength fibreglass, like the hull of a boat. The body of the Grandcruiser is bonded together using SIKA high strength industrial adhesives normally used in aircraft and boats. With the overlapping one piece roof attached to the one piece sides, structural strength is enormous and the risk of leaks is virtually eliminated.

The fibreglass exterior also eliminates the risk of hail damage, and is easily repaired in the event of an accident – just like a boat. Even after years in harsh Australian enviroment, the fibreglass gelcoat can be polished up to look like new.

GRANDCRUISER caravans have been set up for easy and comfortable long and short term living and travelling, with or without access to mains power. They come with battery and a 12volt system that runs the lights, water pump, toilet, TV, DVD. The gas system can run your stove, hot water, and fridge so you don’t have to rely on anyone and can be free to enjoy those ‘out of the way’ places.

If you’re looking to buy a caravan that’s more like a luxury apartment and strong enough to take you on your journey around the rough and wild Australia, have a good look at the Grandcruiser.
